The RAF's Enhanced Paveway III (EPWIII) is a 2,000-pound laser-guided bomb designed to penetrate hardened structures, such as reinforced buildings or underground bunkers. It incorporates both laser and GPS guidance, allowing it to be used in all weather conditions, day or night, against both static and mobile targets. The EPWIII is held in reserve for high-value, challenging targets, while other weapons like the smaller Paveway IV and Brimstone missiles are used for routine missions.
First used by the RAF in April 2016 against an Islamic State tunnel and bunker complex in Iraq. Prepared for use against hardened targets in Libya in 2011, such as command and communications centers. Comparison: It is a larger and more powerful weapon than the smaller Paveway IV and Brimstone missiles, which the RAF typically uses for close air support. The EPWIII's advanced guidance kit makes it a more expensive option, so it is reserved for high-value targets.
